Our Troop

Meeting Time and Location

We meet weekly at Stout Memorial United Methodist Church Monday nights 7:00 – 8:30. Map The exceptions to this are nights that there is no school due to snow, holidays, or other days it is closed. Any other changes to the meeting schedule are announced as early as possible to allow for proper planning.

Youth Lead Troop

Empowering youth to be leaders is the core of Scouting. Scouts learn by doing, and what they do is lead their patrols and their troop. The youth themselves develop a troop program, set goals and then take responsibility for figuring out how they will achieve their goals.

Camping

One of the most important parts of Scouting is outdoor camping. Troop 12 schedules a year-round program of weekend outings and a one-week summer camp experience at Camp Kootaga in June. In addition, scouts are encouraged to participate in High Adventure trips offered by the council.

Advancement

Four basic steps lead to Boy Scout advancement through the ranks of Scout to Eagle:

1.A Scout Learns
2. A Scout is tested.
3. A Scout is reviewed.
4. A Scout is recognized.

A Scout learns basic scouting skills to enable him to camp, hike, swim, cook, tie knots, administer first aid, and perform other tasks in the outdoors as well as work as a member of a team and develop leadership skills. The requirements for each rank can be found in their Boy Scout Handbook. The book should become the scout’s main reference point for how he is progressing.

Community Service

Another very important part of the Scouting program is community service. We strongly believe that each Scout has the obligation to give something back to the community in which he lives. In addition to the Eagle Scout projects we undertake during the course of the year, there are several service projects for various organizations within the community. Some are in support of our charter organization, Stout Memorial United Methodist Church, while others benefit local schools, community groups, city residents, and more.

Troop Committee

The Troop Committee functions as an administration and support organization for the Troop and takes care of things such as newsletters, Troop funds, fund raising activities, membership drives and Pack coordination, activity permits and coordination, advancement records, procurement and maintenance of Troop equipment.
The Committee meets the second Monday of every month from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Stout Memorial United Methodist Church. The meetings are open and attendance is encouraged by all parents and other interested adults.

Communications

Communication starts with the youth. For any questions your scout might have about upcoming camp details, we encourage you to allow your scout to gather this information on their own. This is a very important step in gaining independence. We also communicate at weekly troop meetings during circle-up. Another vital method of communication is the Troop message lists. All Scouts and parents should subscribe to these important newsletter lists. A subscription link can be found on the Contact Us page.
